CAMPING MATS

Camping Mats come in all shapes and sizes. Needless to say, we only stock the best, but the best will last you many many years and seldom let you down. There are broadly speaking two types, Foam Mats and Inflatable Mats.

Closed Cell Foam Mats :

Karrimor were marketing closed cell foam mats when many of you were in nappies. Alas, the firm is now defunct, but the Karrimat (which was made by Beacons Products), will last a lifetime and appears indestructable (unless you attack it with a knife or chew it).
Top tip: Puncture a hole in the centre of one end of your mat and tie half a metre of elastic cord to it. Now tie a loop of suitable size in the other end of the cord. Now you will always have something to roll your mat up with, and always have something to anchor it with on a windy day.

Beacons Poducts - Expedition Extreme XL Mat

An extreme mat for use on ice and snow, offering high protection, warmth and comfort. This is the same type of mat as the classic gold Karrimat (alas now deceased), however the dimensions are slightly different. Frequently used on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions, frozen ground and rocky environment. ideal for high-altitude mountaineering and alpine use, as well as backpacking. Very comfortable, warm, lightweight, abrasion resistant, waterproof, and CFC free. Comes rolled in a plastic sleeve with fitted buckled straps bands. Easy to carry and compact to store.

Inflatable Mats - Thermarest :

Inflatable mats are much comfier than foam mats and offer better insulation against cold. However they are heavier, more expensive and are vulnerable to puntures, not all of which are easily mendable. On a long expedition it is wise to take a foam mat as well, and we would not recommend an inflatable mat for alpine type bivis where they may be easily damaged. It is best to store inflatable mats unrolled, and with the valve open so as to prevent condensation forming internally.

Thermarest invented the inflatable mat, and in our opinion, with the possible exception of Exped (see below) their products are the best available. All their mats come with a stuff sack.

Inflatable Mats - Exped :

What could be better than a Thermarest? Well for Arctic and similar use, a down filled air mattress. This is a new innovative concept that we can personally vouch for as superb. Voted European Outdoor Award Product of the Year 2002/3.

Exped - Down Air Mattress 9cm

Down Air Mattress 9cm This down filled air mattress offers tremendous comfort and is claimed to be three times warmer than any other mat of similar weight. Also it packs down well as it has no foam in it. So you end up with a product that is little heavier or bulkier than a Basecamp Thermarest. Whether it is three times warmer is hard to know, but we can say, after three weeks testing in the Arctic (see photo!), that it is definitely warmer. Below is what Exped say about it:

Tests conducted by Exped and EMPA, the Swiss government's material test and research laboratory, showed that heat loss to the ground is typically 3 x greater than to exposed air. However the down fill insulation reduced this heat loss by 65%. Money is perhaps better spent on a mat that reduces heat loss than on a warmer sleeping bag.

Extremely lightweight: No other outdoor mat of comparable weight offers Down Air Mattress' heat resistance of 1.6 m2 x K/W). (A 1" self-inflating mat offers a heat resistance value of only 0.5 m2 x K/W, or 1/3)!

Only one locking valve is needed for inflation with the included combo pump and storage sack, but dual, locking valves permit fast deflation.

Similar in concept to down sleeping bags, baffles between the shell's six chambers eliminate cold spots, prevent down shift, and further improve the air cushion.

The laminated polyester fabric surfaces are textured for slip proof comfort and are absolutely airtight. High frequency welded seams, offer the most secure method of fusing fabrics. (In fact, welded seams are stronger than the fabric itself). Neutral colours dry quickly.

A combination Pump and Stuff Sack is included: two valves mate to provide safe inflation. Individual comfort will vary, but about 10 pumps will fill the mat. Pumping air, rather than blowing it, prevents humidity from reaching the down, which could clump or freeze. Foam has also been added to the pump sack to assist the inflation process.

Beacons Poducts - Tent Underlay 1.5m wide by per metre length (£5 postage will be added per order)

Lightweight (150g/m2), soft foam ground sheet for extra comfort and protection of the groundsheet against damage and dampness. Waterproof and rot proof. Strong 3mm thick physically cross-linked closed cell Alveolit foam structure. Tested in many Antartic and other expedititons, but also ideal for car-based camping where hard campsites together with stones, bits of glass and old ringpulls can wreak serious havoc with your groundsheet.

Dimensions: 1.5m x 3mm and comes in 10m rolls but we will cut this to measure. 1.5 metres is the width of most mountain tents so work out the length that you want in metres (to go under the tent and maybe bell ends too) and order this quantity.

Weight: very light - but bulky!
