CRAMPONS

Photo: Colin Wells on the first pitch of the classic Rjukanfossen (WI 4), Rjukan, Norway.

Boot/Crampon Compatibility: Many manufacturers now rate their mountain boots for stiffness and the type of use they are designed for:

B0: Not really suitable for crampons.

B1: Flexible boots that are suitable for trekking and hill walking only. C1 crampons only.

B2: Semi-rigid boots designed for mountaineering and easier grade snow and mixed climbing, but not for steep ice and harder mixed climbs. C1 or C2 crampons.

B3: Fully rigid boots for mountaineering, ice and mixed climbing at all grades - but not always the most comfortable boots to walk in (though things are improving). C1, C2 or C3 crampons.

Crampons: These should be no stiffer than your boots or they may fall off.

C1: Flexible (eg Kahtoola, Grivel G10)

C2: Semi-rigid (eg Grivel Airtech, G12, G14)

C3: Rigid (eg Grivel Rambo, DMM Terminator)

Thus:
Boot Rating Crampons
B1C1
B2C1-C2
B3C1-C2-C3

Binding System: In addition the binding system should be suitable for the boot. There are currently four main types of binding systems.

Strap On: (this includes plastic "basket" type systems such as Grivel's New Classic): Will fit all boots.

Semi Step In: (eg Grivel's Newmatic): Will only fit boots with a proper heel welt designed for semi step in crampons.

Full Step In: (eg Grivel's Crampomatic Binding): Will only fit boots with a proper heel and toe welt designed for full step in crampons.

GSB (Grivel-Scarpa Binding): Will only fit boots designed specifically for GSB Bindings.

Be aware that some boots have step in heel welts to make them look "techy" even if they're not. If in doubt a modern type Strap On crampon (eg New Classic binding) is best.

Competition Steep Ice Crampons :

Competition crampons are designed for use in steep ice climbing competions and are also used on modern bolted Continental type mixed routes. We do not stock the models listed but can generally obtain them to order.

Grivel - Racing Crampon

Racing Crampon The result of all Grivel's experience in competitions, this is the second generation of the crampons used to win both male and female categories of the World Cup 2002, by Dimitri Biktkov and Xenia Sdobnikova. They are attached permanently to the sole and the front part can be either mono or dual pointed. The rear part has a strong spur that can be mounted asymmetrically and is removable for speed competitions or on traditional out-in-the-open routes.

Boots not included! 590g

We suggest that anyone who is seriously interested in these crampons should get in touch with us with a view to buying a boot/crampon set up complete.

Steep Ice Crampons :

Whilst anyone going cascade climbing in Europe or North America could get on fine with a standard 12 point mountaineering crampon, specialist rigid and semi-rigid steep ice crampons make things a lot easier. These crampons are also very good for Scottish mixed climbing, especially in mono-point mode, as a single vertical point will often fit nicely in a thin crack. However they are generally heavier than other crampons and not so comfy to use as a walking crampon (particularly the completely rigid models). They also used to have a well deserved reputation for balling up badly, but this problem has largely been solved by anti-balling plates.

Grivel - Rambo 4 Crampomatic

Rambo 4 Crampomatic The latest version of Grivel's much acclaimed rigid Rambo crampon is considerably more user friendly than its predecessor, particularly for those climbers who want something that will do for Scottish as well as for icefall use. Although it is basically an asymmetric mono-point, with the point lying under the big toe, a half-length point to the outside of this means that whilst on steep buttress climbs one has all the advantages of a mono-point, on ice and snow routes, the second point kicks in and gives lateral stability normally absent in a mono-point. The length is adjustable with one bolt, and a replacement mono-point can also be replaced by undoing a single bolt. The crampomatic binding means that this crampon will only fit on boots with a step-in facility front and back.

Included with the package is a set of what looks like at first glance a spare set of front points, but is in fact a set of heel spurs. These too can be set up by adjusting a single bolt, though many leading ice climbers consider their use cheating!

The anti-balling plates look very sophisticated with Grivel's excellent snow-popping system incorporated into harder plastic structures, and with an "accordeon" filling the gap in the middle. The heel clip has micro-adjustability, and four of the points are angled away from the line of the frame to make descents in snow easier.

Despite claims that these crampons weigh 1075g/pair, we actually think this is more like 1150g, and that doesn't include the heel spurs which weigh an extra 55g or so.
Should fit boots from size 38-48.

NB This crampon is designed for steep ice climbing and buttress routes of around Scottish IV and above. It is not a suitable crampon for hill walking or general mountaineering.

Grivel - G14

G14 Excellent steep ice and steep buttress crampon with simple no tools length adjustment as per the renowned G12. However on this model the front points are forged vertical format points that can easily be adjusted from bi-point to monopoint (tools supplied). Forged points penetrate hard ice better, with less vibration. In mono-point format they are excellent for mixed climbing as the vertical single point sits well in thin cracks. However this crampon is still flexible enough for walking in. A perfect all-rounder! Price includes the new yellow two piece anti-balling plates, Accordeons, and a set of Super-assymetric bars as well as the standard ones.

Fits boots from 36 - 46ish (however, a long bar is available - see below).

1065g/pair approx not including antiballing plates which add just over 100g.

There are three binding systems available:

Newmatic: Semi-step in with Grivel's excellent plastic toe cap.

Crampomatic: full step-in with wire front bail. Quick to put on in a blizzard but you do have to get them on just right - rigid boots only.

GSB:The third binding system is the Grivel Scarpa Binding (GSB). This consists of a metal prong on the front of the crampon that slots into a slot in the sole of the boot. Various Scarpa boots, like the Phantomlite have this slot included. This new system offers a higher level of security than other binding systems however it will only fit boots that have a GSB slot. If in doubt buy the Crampomatic version above.

Top Tip 1: To fit smaller boots, take the bars out, and swap them over, turning them upside down before fitting them. This brings a small blocking lug into play, effectively shortening the length of the bar.

Top Tip 2: If you have problems fitting the Super-Assymetric bars, take off the AB plates, and you can then slide them in from underneath.

Black Diamond - Cyborg

Cyborg A full step in ("Crampomatic") crampon designed for steep waterfall ice, mixed climbing or hard mountain routes, the Cyborg’s semi-rigid design is very similar to the Grivel G14. Can by used in mono or dual-point configuration, the forged vertical frontpoints perform well on everything from tiny rock edges to thin ice smears. Aggressive secondary points add to balance and stability and an articulated centre bar and micro adjustment on the heel lever heel lever give a good fit on most technical boots from size UK3½ to size UK10½. Boots size 11 and above require the Long Bar kit. Anti-balling plates included.

Mountaineering & Ice-Climbing Crampons :

Mountaineering crampons are generally 12 point, and are designed for use for everything from hillwalking to alpine climbing to Grade V Scottish ice and mixed (anyone regularly climbing harder than this would probably be better off with a semi rigid steep ice crampon - see above). They are built to withstand a massive amount of punishment and are generally more robust than walking crampons. They are also usually heavier.

Grivel - G12

G12 Excellent 12-point semi-rigid steep ice, snow and mixed crampon with simple no tools adjustment. This crampon has long penetrating points and is designed for quite technical ice climbing, though it is still a very reasonable walking crampon. However anyone needing a crampon mainly for walking and easier routes should consider the Airtech (see below). Standard size fits boots from 37-46ish (long bars are available - see below). There are three binding systems available:

New Classic: superb all encasing basket system means that you can put this crampon on just about anything, though it is marginally more fiddly to fit than the other models. The New Classic is also available in an XL version to fit boots up to Size 50.

Newmatic: Semi-step in with Grivel's excellent plastic toe cap - will fit on semi-rigid walking boots.

Crampomatic: full step-in with wire front bail. Quick to put on in a blizzard but you do have to get them on just right - rigid boots only. The Crampomatic is also available in an XL version to fit boots up to Size 50.

Around about 950g/pair of standard size not including anti-balling plates. (fitting these adds just over 100g to the weight).

Price includes anti-balling plates and Accordeons.

Top Tip: To fit smaller boots, take the bars out, and swap them over, turning them upside down before fitting them. This brings a small blocking lug into play, effectively shortening the length of the bar.

Grivel - G12 Anti-balling plate (pair)

G12 Anti-balling plate (pair) Please note that there are three styles of anti-balling plates for G12 crampons.

2006 onwards (yellow, 101.73): These AB plates fit the 2006 onwards style G12 which has "wobbly" crinkled points on the heel section (the heel section is in fact the same as the Airtech heel section).

2005 model (yellow, 101.74): This plate is for the style of G12 (ca 2005) which has a fairly short front section (12cm not including front-points) and also the G12 style heel with smooth points. It will not fit the newest G12s (2006 onwards) which have "wobbly" points.

Extra Large (black, 100.90):
Fits the Grivel G12 Extra Large version and also much older style G12s with the longer front section. This is an older style black AB plate.

Black Diamond - Sabretooth Pro

Sabretooth Pro A full step in ("Crampomatic") crampon designed for all aspects of mountaineering from the high Himalaya to roadside water ice. Similar to the Grivel G12 and quite a lot lighter than the Cyborg. Horizontal frontpoints provide stability in snow yet penetrate alpine and water ice and hold rock edges securely. Secondary points create a stable platform with shear resistance for control in mushy conditions while serrated sub-points grab and hold when you’re rocking over your feet. An articulated centre bar and micro adjustment on the heel lever heel lever give a good fit on most technical boots from size UK3½ to size UK10½. Boots size 11 and above require the Long Bar kit. Anti-balling plates included. ABS plates included.

Grivel - Airtech Crampon

Airtech Crampon Excellent 12-point semi-rigid ice, snow and mixed crampon with simple no tools adjustment. This crampon is similar to the G12 but has shorter points which make it easier and more comfortable to use as a walking crampon but still suitable for mountaineering and easir snow and ice climbs - and in fact just about any grade of mixed. It's lighter weight will appeal to high altitude mountaineers.

Standard size fits boots from 37-47 (there is a long bar available for larger sizes). There are three binding systems available:

New Classic: Superb all encasing basket system means that you can put this crampon on just about anything, though it is marginally more fiddly to fit than the other models.

Newmatic: Semi-step in with Grivel's excellent plastic toe cap - will fit on semi-rigid walking boots.

Crampomatic: Full step-in with wire front bail. Quick to put on in a blizzard but you do have to get them on just right - rigid boots only.

Winter Walking Crampons :

Walking crampons are generally 10 point, and are designed for use purely for winter hill walking - which is not to say they are no good on steep ground. They are generally lighter than 12 point mountaineering models, with shorter less pointy points. However there are no hard and fast rules about these things and 10 point walking crampons regularly get used in the Alps and the Himalayas on quite technical ground. We have even seen some-one lead a grade V icefall in them!

Grivel - G10

G10 Excellent 10-point semi-flexible walking crampon (though we have spotted some-one climbing a grade V ice pitch in them!) with simple no tools adjustment. Fits boots from 37-45½ (long bars are available - see below).

There are three binding systems available:

New Classic: Superb all encasing basket system means that you can put this crampon on just about anything, though it is marginally more fiddly to fit than the other models. The best binding for most walking boots. It is fitted with a much more flexible bar that the other models. The G10 New Classic is also available in an Extra Wide Version, designed for use with snowboard boots and high altitude double boots that do not have step-in crampon facilities. Also fits most telemark boots. 900g/pair.

Newmatic: Semi-step in with Grivel's excellent plastic toe cap.

Crampomatic: Available to order, but the models listed above are more versatile.

820g/pair not including anti-balling plates which add about 100g.

Price includes anti-balling plates.

Top Tip: To fit smaller boots, push the bars forward into the front frame and insert a nut and bolt through the first hole. This acts as a stop, effectively shortening the length of the bar.

Kahtoola - KTS Steel 10 Point Flexi Crampon

KTS Steel 10 Point Flexi Crampon Durable, lightweight flexible 10 point crampons intended for fell-running, hiking and non-technical mountaineering. The strap system is designed to work with running shoes as well as ski, snowshoe, hiking, and telemark boots (an innovative hook on the heel strap hooks onto your shoe laces), and we see no reason why they shouldn't be fixed to rockshoes for short glacier approaches to technical alpine rock climbs.

This steel version (made from 5130 chromoly steel, heat-treated for strength) is the most suitable for the UK as they will cope better with the wear and tear of rocky terrain.

The front points are 26 degrees open for optimal performance with flexible footwear and are ¼" (ca 5mm) longer, and sharper, than the aluminum model. The crampons are still very lightweight, and they fold down into a compact package of 4" x 4" x 8" (ca 10cm x 10cm x 20cm).

Two sizes are available:
S/M fits UK 3 - 8 (however a bulky 7.5 or 8 shoe or boot may need the larger size).
M/L fits UK 8 - 13.

Kahtoola claim that they weigh 662g per pair but we think they are actually lighter at 646g per pair.

Kahtoola - KTS Aluminium 10 Point Flexi Crampon

KTS Aluminium 10 Point Flexi Crampon Ultra-lightweight flexible 10 point crampons intended for fell-running, hiking and non-technical mountaineering on pure ice and snow.

This aluminium version (made from 7075-T6 anodized aircraft aluminum for maximum strength and durability) is not really suitable for the UK as they will not cope with the wear and tear of rocky terrain. They are ideal for activities where they will be used only on pure ice and snow - eg ski-touring.

The front points are 10 degrees open for optimal performance with flexible footwear and are ¾" (ca 15mm) long. These crampons are exceptionally lightweight, and fold down into a compact package of 3.5" x 3.5" x 8" (ca 9cm x 9cm x 20cm).

Two sizes are available:
S/M fits UK 3 - 8 (however a bulky 7.5 or 8 shoe or boot may need the larger size).
M/L fits UK 8 - 13.

Kahtoola claim that they weigh 540g per pair but we think they are actually lighter at 530g per pair.

Spider Described as an "Anti-Sleppering device" on the accompanying literature, which may be mis-spelt, but is quite onomatopoeic when you think about it!

NB: the Spider is NOT a crampon, and is NOT designed for mountaineering or steep hill-walking; never attempt to use it on steep terrain - buy some crampons instead!

Complete with carry pouch. 140g/pair.

Camp - Universal Anti-balling Plate (pair)

Universal Anti-balling Plate (pair) Fits many traditional 10 and 12 point crampons regardless of make , though they may require some "botching" - so if you can get plates specific to your crampon, go for those, rather than these. 95g.

Sizes (approx): Small 4-8, Large 9-12

A better bet may be to cut anti-balling plates from ice cream tub plastic (which is freezer proof!) and fasten them to the crampon frames with short lengths of copper earthing wire - we know of a few climbers who do this and they appear to work a treat!
